What VFR means

Average FPS does not tell the whole story.

A file can report an average near 30 or 60 fps while the time between frames changes throughout the recording. ClipCompat checks the frame-rate mode and, when MediaInfo exposes them, the reported minimum and maximum rates.

CFRConstant Frame Rate: frame timing is reported as constant.
VFRVariable Frame Rate: the source changes timing across the recording.
UnknownIf the file does not expose enough timing metadata, the checker says Test Required rather than guessing.

When it matters

Look at VFR when the timeline feels wrong.

VFR can become relevant when you see proxy mismatches, timing drift, sync trouble or inconsistent scrubbing. The safe response is to preserve the original and create a separate CFR edit copy only when the workflow actually needs it.
